She Makes the Ordinary Extraordinary.

Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris

Associate Provost for Academic Planning

Sidewalks. Bus stops. Parking lots. Transit stations. For Professor of Urban Planning Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris, these ordinary, overlooked spaces of everyday life are the key to a healthier, more walkable and more livable city. Parklets — tiny parks created from traffic triangles and surplus parking spots — are one of her favorite antidotes to empty sidewalks and lifeless neighborhoods. Working with city government and community groups, Loukaitou-Sideris and the ý Luskin School’s “Complete Streets Initiative” helped to open the first two parklets in downtown L.A. Cities around the world are implementing the idea, inspired in part by the toolkit she co-authored, Reclaiming the Right of Way.
